Warley Model Railway Exhibition

1st. Dec. 2006

David Greig, the Trusts General Manager, teamed up with Gareth Evans, the Cambrian Railways Society Press Officer to man a joint stand at the Warley Model Railway Exhibition at the National Exhibition Center near Birmingham. The exhibition attracted many thousands of visitors and is regarded as the premier event of its kind.

It is hoped that having a presence at the event will raise the profile of the Cambrian Railways Project, and show that there is now increased co-operation between the former rival railway groups.

Here we see Gareth Evans and David Greig manning the stand, sited next to BR Standard Class 4 tank 80079, a former Oswestry engine, now preserved on the Severn Valley Railway.

Wolverhampton Station Canopies

4th. Nov. 2006

PC030001

Redevelopment of Wolverhampton Low Level Station site meant that we were given the opportunity of salvaging the 1930’s vintage GWR steelwork from the platform canopies.

A workgroup from the Trust spent a couple of days dismantling this prior to shipping to the LLynclys site, where it has been safely stored until needed. Hopefully it will be used to reinstate the platform canopies on Oswestry Stations’ up platform.

Here we see the metalwork following transportation to Llynclys, a couple of weeks later.

Stop Press:

Wolverhampton City Council, the owners of the station site, have donated the rest of the canopy steelwork to the Trust. This will enable us to hopefully complete the erection of the full length of station canopies at Oswestry Station.

Obituary

David J. Lloyd

1942-2006

DJLLOYD

27th. Sept. 2006

Following a long illness David J. Lloyd, one of a number of people instrumental in the formation of the Trust, sadly passed away on Wednesday 27th September 2006. David was an Independent Councillor on Shropshire County Council for the Whittington Division and Oswestry Borough Council for the Whittington Ward, and also served on Whittington Parish Council. He was also Lord Mayor of Oswestry during 2003-2004.

Graduating from Trinity College, Dublin, he eventually came to the Oswestry area where he took up the post of Head of Geography at Moreton School, from where he famously arranged for his sixth form travel agency students to take over the running of Gobowen Station booking office in 1993, which had recently been closed by BR. The station won the National Rail Awards, ‘Small Station of the Year Award’ in 2004.

David’s funeral was held on Monday 9th. October 2006 at a packed Whittington Parish Church, with members of the three councils and Trust joining family and friends to celebrate his life.

David leaves his wife, Emma, daughters, Carys and Ceinwen, sons-in-law Roly and James, granddaughter, Abigail, and mother, Ada Louise.

Tamper Movement

These two photos show the relative comfort enjoyed by the operating personnel inside the cab of the Tamping machine.

Following instruction on how to prepare and start the machine from ex-railway workers, we were able to propel the Tamper up the line following services on Saturday 23rd. September. Here we see the machine next to Ty-Coch farm.

Due to the complexity of the controls for the tamping operation, the same ex-railway workers have agreed to operate the machine when we start to work on our line.

Future Plans

27th. August. 2006

The latest piece of machinery to be acquired by the Trust is this Plasser-Theurer Universal Tamper/Liner. Built in Austria, this vehicle has been stored at Crewe by Carillion prior to disposal. It is in working order, and has recently been re-engined. All we need now is some training/instruction on how to operate it, as after tamping our current section of track, it will be needed when we finally get occupation of the Gobowen/Llynclys main line. If any one can help us, can they please get in touch ?

The entry to the station area was beginning to look a bit of an eyesore, not the first impression we wished to give visitors. So volunteers set about landscaping the area opposite the station platform. Here we see Harry Matthews and team installing a raised bed which will provide a display of narrow gauge stock.

14th. July. 2006

Following successful negotiations with the Cambrian Railways Society and Shropshire County Council, it has been agreed that the Trust will be developing the line from Gobowen to Llynclys Junction, via Oswestry, where it will connect with the current center of operations of the Trust. The Cambrian Railways Society will develop the line from Llynclys Junction, along the Tanat Valley line to Llaniblodwell, connecting with their operations on the Nantmawr Branch.

Just like the original Cambrian Railways, the project will therefore be able to use the ‘s’ at the end of the Railway, to indicate that we are a combination of more than one railway !
